The USS Iowa was laid down on June 27, 1940, at the New York Naval Shipyard. It was launched on August 27, 1942, and commissioned on February 22, 1943. The Iowa-class battleships were massive, measuring about 887 feet (270 meters) in length and displacing around 45,000 tons. They were capable of reaching speeds of up to 33 knots (38 mph or 61 km/h). The USS Iowa had a crew complement of approximately 1,900 officers and enlisted personnel. The primary armament of the USS Iowa consisted of nine 16-inch (406 mm) guns mounted in three turrets. It also had twenty 5-inch (127 mm) dual-purpose guns, as well as numerous anti-aircraft guns and torpedo tubes. The USS Iowa saw action during World War II, primarily in the Pacific theater. It participated in various operations, including the Battle of Leyte Gulf, where it served as the flagship for Admiral William F. Halsey, Jr. The ship also played a significant role in the bombardment of Japanese-held positions in the Pacific.
