The Leipzig class had a displacement of around 6,600 tons and were armed with nine 15 cm guns in three triple turrets, as well as a number of anti-aircraft guns and torpedo tubes. They had a top speed of around 32 knots and a range of up to 8,000 nautical miles. During World War II, both ships saw action in a number of naval engagements. The Leipzig was sunk in the Battle of the Barents Sea in 1942, while the Nürnberg was sunk by Allied forces in the final days of the war in Europe.
