The Karl-Gerät was primarily designed for destroying heavily fortified positions, such as concrete bunkers and fortresses. It consisted of two main variants: the Karl-Gerät I (also known as the Gerät 040) and the Karl-Gerät II (Gerät 041). The Karl-Gerät I had a 60 cm (24 inch) caliber and fired massive 2-ton projectiles, while the Karl-Gerät II had a 54 cm (21 inch) caliber and fired slightly smaller 1.8-ton shells. These shells were essentially giant high-explosive projectiles intended to cause maximum damage to enemy fortifications.
